A 34-year age gap sounds huge until you realize we’re living in the same house, dealing with the same world, and still arguing about the same glowing rectangle. Parallel 34 starts with a simple question: what does “screen time” actually mean when you’re a kid in 2026 and your parent grew up without a phone at all?
We compare Derek’s childhood tech reality (TV, Nintendo, and riding a bike across town to see friends) with Delaney’s daily phone life, where TikTok and YouTube exist right next to texting and FaceTime. SPEAKER_00Because our um good there. How we do stuff is different than our age difference is 34 years.
SPEAKER_02Yes, but why parallel if we do stuff different? Because we're like in the same world.
SPEAKER_01But we don't.
SPEAKER_02And we live basically the same life, but we each do our own thing because we're 34 years apart. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So what do we want to talk about today on this very first episode? Technology? Screen time? Yes. Stuff like that? Yeah. Yeah? Okay. Well, I guess first we should introduce ourselves. I'm Derek. I'm Dad.

Choosing Screen Time As The Topic
SPEAKER_02So if we're gonna do technology and screen time, how should we get this conversation started?
SPEAKER_00I don't know.
SPEAKER_02How should we dive into it? What should be the first like part of the conversation, do you think?
SPEAKER_00What we use it our phones for?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you want to focus on phones and screen time? That'd be a good one. Okay. So when I was your age, back in the olden days, in the 1900s, I didn't have a cell phone. Because frankly, when I was your age, there was not a cell phone yet, like you know it today. There wasn't even a flip phone yet. In the 19 We'd have to do some research. So maybe if there was, we'll do one of those like fancy edits and like put it like up on the screen. And like this was the cell phone of the 1900s. Back in 1992. That's when I would have been 10, which is your age.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_0234 years ago. So my screen time was sitting in front of a TV playing Nintendo. That was my screen time, the original Nintendo. So what do you use your phone for now? Like what's your if you had to think like speaking of phones, there it just went on the floor and it thudded under the table, which it's fine, it can stay there because that's why we don't need to hold on to it when we're doing a podcast. So what do you do?
TikTok, YouTube, And Friend Time
SPEAKER_02Like your phone, what do you think is like your go-to use? Like what do you use it for the most?
SPEAKER_00Well, I checked earlier and it was like TikTok.
SPEAKER_02Right. Scrolling. But what else? What do you use it for though? Just like social media stuff like TikTok. Not even a social media, TikTok, like watching short form content, like short form videos.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like YouTube and TikTok.
SPEAKER_00And communicating with my friends, other than being at school.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Because I think that's what really kicked off this whole idea for this podcast was because we see that stuff so differently. Yeah. And any parents watching this or kids watching this, you're gonna understand that when we look at screen time, we see it as like a bad thing because you're just sitting in front of the screen ten inches from your face. But you guys, like what do you guys use it for a ton?
SPEAKER_00Calling our friends and like texting them, and then probably like YouTube and take talk.
SPEAKER_02So the the calling your friends thing and talking to them, what would you you call that? Like as a as a broader term?
SPEAKER_00Communicating.
SPEAKER_02And socializing, maybe. So you use your phone and your friends use your phones to be social, to talk to each other, because you're obviously at an age where you can't yet really all the time when you want to go to other people's houses, because you don't all live right next to each other in a tiny little community, you live spaced out over town. Especially Yeah, when she lives in a different town, which we know used to live here, but different town now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So you guys can communicate whenever you want to and see each other because you're on FaceTime. Where when I was growing up, I didn't have that. So if I wanted to see someone, I had to ride a bicycle across town and go see somebody. A little bit different, huh? So you said your biggest one was TikTok?
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02So what do you because you TikTok wise, obviously you're just scrolling mindlessly, looking at things. When you're talking to your friends, if you're not just on the phone talking, what do you guys do?
SPEAKER_00Play Roblox.
SPEAKER_02Is it mostly just Roblox?
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02What kind of games do you play on Roblox?

SPEAKER_00Murder mystery too, Caven. Um other fake murder mystery twos, games like Brookhaven, oh just to impress.
SPEAKER_02Some DCI.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So when I guess Roblox, since we're on that topic and that's one thing that you guys do, there's a lot of people who are anti-roblox, especially parents, because there's a lot of creepy people that get on Roblox and try to talk to kids and do that kind of stuff. How do you guys, or you in particular, how do you combat that? How do you make sure that doesn't happen to you? Like what do you do to protect yourself when you're playing Roblox?
SPEAKER_00Don't give out information about myself.
SPEAKER_02That's a good one. So like you don't share your real name or you don't share where you live or any of that kind of stuff?
SPEAKER_00And if I do do like the names above my head and stuff, my go-to names like or something.
SPEAKER_02There's random fake names that probably tons of other people use also. Yep. It's not a bad idea. And then when it comes to like communicating with people, like who do you talk to on there? Um, if like not individual people, like by their names, but like I guess the better question would be do you talk to random people or do you keep your communication just to your friends?
SPEAKER_00In chat and Brookhaven, when I'm like doing role plays and stuff, I'll talk to enough people in the roleplay, but that's it.
SPEAKER_02And then I don't because in that that's one where you have to use like the pre-made messages, yeah? No? Oh. But you'll but you're saying like you won't like have just a general conversation, you'll make sure it's just specifically about what's being played in the game. Yeah. Gotcha. Um, and then otherwise, if you just talk to your friends, obviously it's just a normal conversation. Now, when you're talking to your friends, can other people see that conversation, or is it just a private you with the other person you're talking to?
SPEAKER_00There's no way to do private conversations in Brookhaven unless you use the sign. So other people can see it, but we don't use each other's names.
SPEAKER_02Nice. So you guys don't talk by names or locations, or you guys are all pretty good about that, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Usually when I join, I just ask her if she can call.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, true, because I guess you guys probably don't even really talk that much in the game, do you? You guys just talk on a FaceTime call with FaceTime in the background, which is why your screen time FaceTime says it's like a minute for the week, even though we both know that is a complete lie. Complete lie from the Apple device that you're using. Um which it must just be that it's only doing that like in the back because it's in the background, it's not actually showing what's on the screen, which would make sense because it's called screen time not.
SPEAKER_00Even then I was on the phone with one of my other friends, and yet we weren't using Roblox or anything at the time for like.
SPEAKER_02Yes. I don't know. Or maybe it just doesn't count it because Apple doesn't want to look like they're being used a lot, so that way they can't be sued for some reason or something. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02Same reason Apple got in trouble at one point for having faulty batteries and making their batteries go bad, so people would have to replace their phones and causing them to go slowly so that people would have to upgrade their phones. Companies did it all the time. Welcome to technology. Okay, so that's so you that's what you used it for and and all that stuff. So I guess my point of view on it is I always I
Why Screen Time Numbers Feel Wrong
SPEAKER_02guess let me back up. When I tell you like that you don't need to be on it so much, what are my main concerns with being on your phone so much, especially your phone so much?
SPEAKER_00You have certain apps you're talking about.
SPEAKER_02Hmm?
SPEAKER_00You have certain apps you're talking about.
SPEAKER_02No, I'm talking about just your phone in general.
SPEAKER_00It'll hurt my eyeballs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Which uh even Apple has that little, what's it called?
SPEAKER_00Um, arm distance length thing that you can apply.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So it makes it like keep your phone at a certain distance. Which is crazy because I've told you these exact things, and then it's actually a feature on the phone. It's it's weird. How sometimes parents can be a right with this stuff. Hmm. Weird. Yeah. So what else do I say? Do you remember? Or is there much else I say other than it's not good for your eyes, it can hurt your brain?
SPEAKER_00Uh uh. I don't know. I don't remember at this exact moment.
SPEAKER_02Is there one thing I say about like sometimes who?
SPEAKER_00I get distracted a lot, and then I don't do what I'm supposed to.
SPEAKER_02Like what?
SPEAKER_00Uh vacuum, clean my room. Like chores?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Because you get sucked into your phone and you leave the real world for a while?
SPEAKER_00The other day I wasn't in my phone, I was healing.
SPEAKER_02Okay, you were using your heelys, I get that, but still. Do you remember another thing I say?
SPEAKER_00Do what you're supposed to do for what?
SPEAKER_02No, talking about the phone, particularly just the phone. And especially like social media, which like I said, you're not on social media yet, and that's gonna be a ways away still. But I say if you're on your phone a ton, it's also not good for what?
Eyes, Chores, And Mental Health Worries
SPEAKER_02Or it it can it not that it's not good for, but it could be not great for your mental health.
unknownOh god, yes.
SPEAKER_02Because you're so focused by your phone, so then if you don't have it, like you've some people if they don't have their phone, they like start freaking out. Like have like anxiety and panic attacks and because they need that technology and they need the communication right there in their hand.
SPEAKER_01Oh.
SPEAKER_02Oh what? Are we just acknowledging that? No, I get that. I get that. Um, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh you said something earlier, I don't know what it was, but like while we were doing the podcast, not that long ago.

Band Class Detour And Name Privacy
SPEAKER_00on uh Monday.

SPEAKER_02So I like how our our f technology screen time conversation has now shifted to band. Well, while we're on it, what instrument are you playing this year in band?
SPEAKER_00Auto saxophone.
SPEAKER_02It's the first year doing band, huh?
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02So you've had two band classes so far? Or just one? One. I think you should have had two.

SPEAKER_02Oh no, because it's day six is the second day of the rotation, right?

SPEAKER_00Well, no, because I have that band lesson and then I was supposed to have one at 3 10. Or no, like 2 45. That got cancelled.

SPEAKER_00Um, I'm not quite sure, but make know that we have them at cause we have to go down there at nine, arriving two minutes early.

SPEAKER_00Cause like he has full group and like day sixes and stuff is with like everybody in your class that's doing banned.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then if you have like certain band lessons with just people doing the same instrument, I use you in your class, and I think just doing the same instrument in fifth grade.
SPEAKER_02Here's the other thing, too, and it this is gonna sound weird after the fact, but I think what I'm going to do at least for now, and moving forward, let's just say my friends. Because the friends' names that you just said, I'm going to edit out.

Just because I don't really think that a lot of people are going to listen to this or watch this, but you never know at some point. Who knows? Maybe we have thousands of listeners and watchers, and like, you know, we become super famous and something. I don't know.

I guess I didn't really talk about my screen time. So let's talk about that.
Derek’s Daily Tech Routine And Doomscrolling
SPEAKER_02So my screen time, when I get up in the morning, I will sales run through a full day of my existence and how my day goes. So I wake up and usually the first thing I do is just I'll hop on Facebook just to see what's going on. Usually Twitter, though, first, or X, I guess it's called now, because that'll be a good like source I can check the news, see if anything crazy is going down, especially like in the NFL if there's any trades or sports stuff. Yeah. And usually then like my technology use isn't so much looking at my phone, it's more so utilizing apps on my phone. Like Spotify is used all day, literally all day. If I'm in the truck while I'm driving around, Spotify is going. Um, or I'm talking to the the machine that is smart inside my phone, which I'm not gonna say right now, otherwise one of these cameras will decide to stop filming and answer my question that I'm not asking it. But anyway, uh I utilize the AI stuff on there quite a bit and Spotify. And then if I get really bored, I'll watch some reels or some ticky talkies. What are you doing?
SPEAKER_00It looks like my hair's blue.
SPEAKER_02And then well, there's a blue light back here behind the table. I know it is kind of popping up. I need to fix that because I don't really want the blue coming up onto us, but yeah, like right now your face is blue.
SPEAKER_00What?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because it's like just picking it all up. You can't really see it even on that, but yeah, a little bit. There it's better. But yeah, I need to fix that so the blue isn't here, that it just stays back here.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, earlier while my phone was in my lap, I was looking down at the uh keychain thing. The green ones were glow in the dark.
SPEAKER_02Oh really?
SPEAKER_00Well, they were glowing in the blue light bulb.
SPEAKER_02So probably not glow in the dark, they were more um like blue light. Black light kind of stuff stuff. Yeah. Um, so that's kind of my day. That's about all we do. And then I get home and mindlessly doom scroll while I got nothing else going on. If I'm not doing something with you or anyone else in the home, I'm usually just doom scrolling.

SPEAKER_02If I'm not watching sports. Which it's soon. Tomorrow is football season. College football is back.

Pen Club Side Hustles At School
SPEAKER_00No, except uh I don't know if we're actually going to do it. But like me and tell of my friends last year had like a pen club in our a pen club in our class and we'd like have people rent out pens for the day.
SPEAKER_02Like pen as in like a writing utensil or pen as in like a pen you would put on a shirt?
SPEAKER_00Pen as in a writing utens. 'Cause one of my friends had a ton of flare pens and Mr. Sketch pens. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Did you guys charge money to rent them out?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_02Should I charge like a quarter? 50 cents, something make some money.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's what we were thinking about on the end of the year, like making bracelets and stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And having them be like a quarter or something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you definitely could. Or a dollar. Yeah, and then $100 a piece.
SPEAKER_00And then in my class this year, there's somebody doing like they make paper per bags with fake cash.

SPEAKER_00And people have to pay fake cash. And then somebody else is rent doing a pen renting thing.

SPEAKER_00But oh, back to the thing I started this whole thing about.

SPEAKER_00Uh back to the thing that I started what I was just saying about is that she talked about like maybe going to her grandparents or her house and making stuff for that pen club.
SPEAKER_02Oh god, so kind of doing it again, but doing some extra stuff. Yeah. Makes sense.
SPEAKER_00Cause last year we had like six workers.
SPEAKER_02And then so were you guys the bosses or what? Um one of the who was the CEO? Never mind.
SPEAKER_00Um one of them was the manager, which is the person that like made the whole thing up.

SPEAKER_00And the other one was the co-manager. I was the receptionist that like collected receipts. There were a lot of those.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then there were some people that took orders. Our whole class knew about it.

SPEAKER_00Even our teacher, she didn't care.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00She let us have our meetings in the library. Well, her class library.

Starting Over After Podcast Nerves

About so the room that we're in, I started putting together about two years ago. And I think I did what four episodes of another podcast just talking about sports.

And like I would talk to mom and we'll kind of figure things out would be what? Freedom? Like you'd like me going to the bus stop or well, like bus stop or like going around the block or being outside of our vision. Know what I mean? Yeah. I think that's something we could talk about next time. It'll be like how because of again, going back to all those weird crazy people there are in the world, how things when I was your age were way different than what they are now.
